Christ the Door

Second half of the 16th century (?)
Mosaic
Church of San Giorgio dei Greci, Venice

The Greek letters on Christ's halo stand for God's revelation to Moses, "I am that I am." The text on the scroll is from John 9:2, "I am the door. By me, if any man enter in, he shall be saved: and he shall go in, and go out, and shall find pastures." Fittingly, the mosaic is above the main door of the church.

According to Wikipedia the church was built during the second half of the 16th century. I am assuming that the mosaic dates to that time.
